Virus Yellows Complex

Symptoms:
• Depends on the virus
• Vein clearing / yellowing in younger leaves
• Interveinal yellowing of leaf tips of older-middle aged leaves
• Thickening of leaves, becoming leathery, brittle to "crunchy"
• Secondary infection with Alternaria is not uncommon

Epidemiology:
• Complex can consist of Beet yellow virus, Beet western yellows virus, and others
• Transmitted mainly by green peach aphids, but also by black bean aphids

Control:
• Insecticide applications to control the vector
• Some varieties show tolerance to the virus yellows complex
